This is a second semester course in calculus, which covers in depth integration, applications of integration, and sequences and series. Specific topics include advanced techniques of integration, volume, area, and arc length computations, firstorder linear differential equations, sequences, series, power series, and Taylor series of functions. Students in Section 503 are enrolled in a regular section of Math 172, and students in Section 200 are enrolled in an Honors section of Math 172. Both sections meet concurrently and cover the same material in lectures. In terms of workload, the two sections will have different homework assignments and exams. If you have any questions about the differences between regular and honors Math 172, please let me know.

Textbook:  The required textbook is Calclus, Early Vectors, by James Stewart, Thomson Brooks/Cole, 1999, ISBN 0534493483.

Recitations:  Wednesdays will usually be used to answer questions on course material and homework and to cover additional examples. Quizzes will also be given out on Wednesdays. 




Exams:  There will be 3 Exams during the semseter (in class) and a Final Exam. See schedule below. 




Homework:  Homework will be due each week for a grade. Here is the list of graded problems. Working with other students on homework problems is perfectly acceptable, but each student is expect to turn in his or her own writeup of homework solutions. Late homework will not be accepted, except as allowed by university policies on missed work (see below). Your two lowest homework scores will be dropped at the end of the semester. Additional suggested homework problems are also available here. 




Quizzes:  There will be a quiz during recitation sections approximately every week. Missed quizzes cannot be made up, except as allowed by university policies on missed work (see below). Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. 




Calculators:  Use of calculators on homework is perfectly acceptable. However, calculators will not be permitted on quizzes and exams. 




Prerequisite:  Calculus I: Math 151, Math 171, or equivalent.

Missed Work:  Making up missed work (including missed exams, quizzes, and homework) will be arranged according to University policies only.
