### Course Description:

This is a first course in linear algebra. Topics covered inlcude linear equations, matrices, real vector spaces, linear transformations, change of bases, determinants, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, diagonlization, and inner products. There will be an emphasis on proofs, and students will be expected to write mathematical proofs to solve problems on both homework and exams.

### Course Information:

Instructor: Matthew Papanikolas Office Hours: Tues. 11:00-12:00, Thurs. 1:00-2:00; also by appointment Office: 321 Milner E-mail: map@math.tamu.edu Textbook: The required textbook is Linear Algebra with Applications, 8th Ed., by Steven J. Leon, Prentice Hall, 2010, ISBN-10 0-13-600929-8, ISBN-13 978-0-13-600-929-0. Course Syllabus: The course covers most of chapters 1-6. See below for a detailed weekly syllabus. Calculators: Use of calculators on homework is perfectly acceptable. However, calculators will not be permitted on exams. Prerequisite: Math 148, Math 152, or Math 172 (second semester calculus); and Math 220; or approval of instructor. Course Webpage: http://www.math.tamu.edu/~map/courses/323-fa13/ Department Webpage: The department's page on Math 323 is available here.

### Homework:

Homework Problem Sets: There will be weekly assignments of problems from the text, which will be turned in for a grade. Your two lowest homework scores will be dropped at the end of the semester when calculating your homework average. Homework sets will be posted here http://www.math.tamu.edu/~map/courses/323-fa13/hw.html. It is perfectly reasonable for students to collaborate on homework, but each student is expected to write up solutions individually. Students turning in nearly identical work may not receive full credit on assignments.

### Exam Schedule:
