Computer Laboratory Schedule
Fall 1996
The goal of the computer laboratory is to show how
the computer can be used to solve problems that are too
difficult to solve by hand. Most of the first half of the
semester is designed to get used to the Maple syntax.
The second half of the semester will concentrate more
on the use of Maple in doing mathematics. A tentative
schedule is as follows.
- Week 1 Set up accounts. Send e-mail to a friend.
Maple Quick tour. Students should read through chapter 1
before the second lab meeting.
- Week 2
In lab, work through pages 3-7 (chapter 1) on assigning variables, factor, simplify and plots. Students should read through chapter 2
before the third lab meeting.
- Week 3
Turn in page 12 (chapter 1 exercises) # 3, 4, 8, 9, 10.
In lab, work through pages 15 - 18 (chapter 2) on the difference between a function and an expression. Students should read through chapter 3 before the fourth
lab meeting.
- Week 4 Turn in page 31 (chapter 2 exercises) # 1, 3, 9, 14ab, 17.
In lab, work through the examples in chapter 3. Students should read
through sections 4.1 and 4.2 on implicit differentiation before the sixth lab meeting.
- Week 5 No computer lab this week due to Exam I.
- Week 6 Turn in page 43 (chapter 3 exercises) # 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 12.
In lab, work through sections 4.1 and 4.2 on implicit differentiation.
Read section 3.12 on Newton's method in text
before coming to the seventh lab meeting.
- Week 7
Turn in exercise 3 on page 57 (chapter 4).
In lab, cover Newton's method and
work through page 44 exercise # 11 ab.
- Week 8 Catch-up week.
Turn in page 44, exercise 11 ab.
Students should read through
chapter 5 before the 10th lab meeting (note however, the
lecture will not cover this material until the 10th week).
- Week 9 No computer lab due to Exam II.
- Week 10
Work through sections 5.1-5.3.
- Week 11 Turn in page 67 (chapter 5 exercises) # 2, 3, 6, 8, 9.
In lab,
get started on page 70, exercise 11 (can do exercise 10 as a warm-up).
This and later exercises will require more thought (for problem
set-up) than previous exercises.
- Week 12 Turn in page 70, exercise 11.
In lab, work through section 6.2 (pages 72-74).
- Weeks 13 -15 Do the syntax for integration (page 84).
Turn in page 75 (chapter 6) # 1, 4, 5 and page 86 (chapter 7) # 1,4,7 by the end of the term.
Note that Week 13 is Thanksgiving week, and Exam II is on Week 14.
