5.7 Applied Maximum and Minimum Problems

Steps in Solving Applied Maximum and Minimum Problems:
  1. Understand the problem.
  2. Draw a diagram.
  3. Introduce notation. Let Q be the quantity to be maximized or minimized.
  4. Relate Q to the other quantities.
  5. If Q is a function of more than one variable, look for relationships between the other variables, and reduce it to a single variable.
  6. Use the methods of Sections 5.1, 5.3 and 5.4 to find the absolute maxima or minima.
