Steps in Solving Applied Maximum and Minimum Problems:
- Understand the problem.
- Draw a diagram.
- Introduce notation. Let Q be the quantity to be maximized or minimized.
- Relate Q to the other quantities.
- If Q is a function of more than one variable, look for relationships between the other variables, and reduce it to a single variable.
- Use the methods of Sections 5.1, 5.3 and 5.4 to find the absolute maxima or minima.
