The Spread of Disease (Epidemiology)
What is a simulation?
Why are simulations useful?
What are the basic steps in the process of solving a problem using
a simulation? The objective for this projects is to learn, in general,
about simmulations and their use, and then applay that knowledge to
a problem in the spread of disease.
Part I.
How can we model the spread of infectious disease?
If you choose this problem, possible areas for research could be:
- Where, and by whom, is research conducted regarding infectious
diseases?
- What infectious diseases are currently receiving the most
attention?
- What are some of the infectious diseases that have been brought
under trol by vaccines? Who discovered vaccines?
Part II.
Choose one of the following:
- Write a program (for the TI-82 or for Maple)
that simulates the rolling of a die (that in turn is a model for the
spread of disease)
- Write a scavenger hunt for a web search that takes students to
interesting and educational web pages related to the study of infectious
diseases.
Part III .
Give a 15 minute presentation.
