Fee-Refunds
Scenario: Many students enroll in courses and
then later withdraw from them. Afterwards, such students may drop down
to part-time status. This affects the refunding of course and other
fees.
The Higher Education Commision in your state has scheduled hearings on
this issue, and the Board of Trustees has hired your firma as
consultants to help them prepare their presentation.
The Student Senate has passed a resolution condemning the current
University policy and the Associate Vice President has issued a
statement claiming that further erosion of the University's ability to
retain student fees would cause fewer course offerings.
Part 1 .
Examine the current fee refund schedule for your university. Present a
graph and formula for the current refund schedule. Examine the refund
schedule and explain why some people might be upset at the policy.
Create alternative plans including
- Quadratic plans (two-one concave up,one oncave down)
- Exponential plan
- No-refund plan
- Full refund plan
and examine each from the point of view of the student and the
administration.
Choose the plan you believe to be the best choice, and outline the
reasons for your choice.
Part II .
Prepare a written report of your results for the Board of Trustees.
Include scatter plots, models, and graphs.
Part III .
Prepare a Maple lab to accompany your project.
Part IV .
Give a 15 minute presentation.
