Course Title: Differential Equations

Catalog Course Description. Credit 3. Linear ordinary differential equations, solutions in series, solutions using Laplace transforms, systems of differential equations.

In the Honors Section, MATLAB will be used instead of Maple. We will also spend much more time on numerical methods and dynamical systems.

Prerequisites: Math 251 or equivalent. Knowledge of computer algebra system (Matlab).

Text: Fundamentals of Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, 3rd Edition by Nagle Saff;

Time & Location of classes: TR 9:35-10:50 in BLOC 131

Homework: Homework problems will be assigned for each section, according to the class syllabus. It is imperative that you keep up and do the assigned problems. Only a subset of the problems will be graded

Extra Credit: A problem from the Group Projects may be done for up 5 points extra credit. Up to 10 such problems may be submitted, as long as there is at least one problem from each chapter covered. The problem solution will take the form of a report, the format of which will be described at a later time.

Exams: There will be three in-class exams and a comprehensive final.

Each regular exam will count as 100 points and the final exam is worth 150 points (25% of final grade). No make up exams will be given without a University approved excused absence (illness verified by doctor's note, death in family, school-related trip, or circumstances beyond your control - with proof). If you have an excused absence for an exam, you should contact me as soon as possible to show me your excuse (preferably within one week). You can then either take a make up exam (different from the original), or I will give you the option of letting your final exam grade count for the missed test.

Grading Policy:

MAKE-UP POLICY: Make-ups for missed exams will only be allowed for a university approved excuse in writing. Wherever possible, students should inform the instructor before an exam or quiz is missed. Consistent with University Student Rules , students are required to notify an instructor by the end of the next working day after missing an exam or quiz. Otherwise, they forfeit their rights to a make-up.

SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY: Copying work done by others, either in-class or out of class, is an act of scholastic dishonesty and will be prosecuted to the full extent allowed by University policy. Collaboration on assignments, either in-class or out-of-class, is forbidden unless permission to do so is granted by your instructor. For more information on university policies regarding scholastic dishonesty, see University Student Rules .
