Abstract: We give a historical survey of work on stability and smoothing estimates in maximum-norm of spatially semidiscrete finite element approximations of a model parabolic equation, restricting ourselves for simplicity to piecewise linear finite elements in two space dimensions. We also relate these matters to the theory of analytic semigroups.
