Getting to Texas A&M by Air

Texas A&M is located in College Station, Texas. College Station and Bryan are adjacent cities and are sometimes referred to interchangeably. Easterwood Airport, located in College Station, is served by Continental and American Airlines, connecting to Houston and Dallas.

The three closest major cities are Houston, Austin, and Dallas. Houston has two airports: Intercontinental and Hobby; Houston is about 100 miles from College Station, while Austin is 120 miles and Dallas about 190 miles.

Driving from Houston/Austin vs. flying: currently, Enterprise has the best rate (US$155/week) for car rental. If you are a domestic visitor and can get state rates, Advantage offers a US$37 one way rate between Houston and College Station. (So you could spend US$74 but NOT use the rental car while in College Station.)

    The Main Hotel and the campus

    Conference participants will be staying at Super 8 motel. The address for the hotel is 301 Texas Avenue, College Station, Texas (Tel#: 979-846-8800), but the hotel is actually on a small street called Cooner street, a block from the intersection of Texas Avenue and University Drive. For those traveling from the airport, the hotel is a 10 minute taxi ride away, costing around 10$.

    Walking to Blocker (the main building for the conference) takes about 15 minutes; on the detailed campus map, with key, Super 8 is located at the junction of Texas avenue and Cooner street (exactly at the number 3 on the right side of the map).


    Parking on campus

    Parking is free in Lot 50 on the weekends (i.e. during the conference). Lot 50 is located at the intersection of Bizzell and University, and is a 5 minute walk from Blocker. During the workshop parking must be paid daily, so we suggest attendees leave their cars at Super 8 and walk/take the bus to Blocker.


    Shuttle Transport

    May 17-19 shuttle departs Super 8 at 8:15am, 8:45am.
    May 20 shuttle departs Super 8 at 8am and 8:30am.
    May 21 shuttle departs Super 8 at 8:15am, 8:45am.
    There will be an evening shuttle from Blocker to Super 8 at 5pm on the 17th and 18th, and at 7pm on the 19th. On the 20th the shuttle will leave Cafe Excel (after conference dinner) at 8:15, and then make a second run, if necessary, departing Excel at 8:45, with a stop at Blocker at 8:50. On Sunday, the shuttle will depart Blocker at 12:15pm.


    Talks

    For the coding theory workshop, talks will be in Blocker 156; the main conference talks will be in Blocker 158; both these rooms are in the first floor of Blocker.


    Computer support

    All workshop/conference participants will receive an account/password during registration. On Wed-Friday, computer room (Blocker 125) will be open 11-1:30 and 3:30-5pm. On Saturday the room will be open 8--8:50, 12:30--2:20, and 5-6pm. On Sunday, hours are 8:30-9:30.


    Weather

    May in College Station is generally pleasant, with an average low of 65F and average high of 85F. We recommend summer clothes (but bring a jacket and umbrella, just in case). Current weather information.


    Rec Center

    Texas A&M has a recreation center with an excellent pool, quarter mile indoor track, climbing wall, weight rooms, and raquetball and squash courts. A week long pass is 24$ and a daily pass is 6$. Hours are 6am-9pm weekdays, and 10am-9pm on weekends. It is on Wellborn Road, across the street from Kyle Field, about a 20-30 minute walk from Blocker.
