The Maxson Lectures for the year 2007 were given by
Georgia McClure Benkart graduated from Yale in 1974, the 29th of Nathan Jacobson's 33 students. She has been at the University of Wisconsin ever since, and has had several visiting appointments at the Institute of Advanced Study, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, and elsewhere. She won the University of Wisconsin Distinguished Teaching Award in 1987 and the Mid-Career Faculty Research Award in 1996. She was the Mathematical Association of America Pólya Lecturer for 2000-2002, and a Van Vleck Professor for 2005-2006. Professor Benkart's research is in Lie algebras, representation theory, and combinatorics. She has had 21 Ph.D students, 55 coauthors, and has written more than 100 journal articles. She has given hundreds of invited talks all over the world.
