Math 171-503, Fall 2005
TTh: 11:10 -- 12:25 in Blocker 156
F: 11:30 -- 12:20 in Blocker 156

Instructor: Michael Stecher

Text: Calculus Early Vectors by Stewart

Office: Milner 126/Blocker 601K, 845-3269, stecher@math.tamu.edu

Office Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 until 3:00 in Blocker 601K, and by appointment.
I realize that many of you will not be able to avail yourselves of my office hours. If that is the case, let me know, and we will arrange a time that is suitable for both of us. Do not wait too long if you are having problems. The sooner we get them fixed the happier both of us will be. I also encourage you to make use of e-mail. I check my mail on a regular basis, and have been known to answer questions in the wee small hours of the morning.

The math department has developed a diagnostic test that all of you will have to take. Click here to get instructions for taking this test. It will count as one quiz grade for you. Taking it gets you a 10, not taking it gets you a 0. The department plans to use the results as a placement tool for incoming freshmen in the future. That is, incoming freshman will take this test and their score will be used to determine what math class they should take. Because of this, please do not treat this lightly. Give an honest effort in taking the exam.

Go to this page to find assignments, solutions to various problems that arise during the semester, exam schedules, and announcements of any sort. I would encourage you to check this page out at least once or twice a week.

We will be covering most of the first 6 chapters of Stewart's text, and I will be supplementing some of this material. The order in which we will be going through the text is

Chap. 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 4, 6

Note that we will cover chapter 5 before chapter 4.

Your semester grade will be based upon the following

An A is 90% or 495 points, a B is 80% or 440 points, etc.
