Counting and equidistribution for actions of large groups

Alexander Gorodnik of California Institute of Technology

We discuss actions of lattices on homogeneous spaces. For discrete orbits, one is interested in the number of lattice points in increasing sequence of balls. It will be explained how to estimate the asymptotic of this number using ergodic theory. In the case of dense orbits, we discuss how to compute the asymptotic distribution. Based on joint works with Amos Nevo and Barak Weiss.
