First Day HandoutMATH 442, SECTION 501, Spring 2004

Mathematical Modeling

Instructor: Dr. Yalchin Efendiev, Bocker 608K

Phone: 845-1972

Email: efendiev@math.tamu.edu

Office hours: TBA

Class time and place: Tuesday ENPN212, Thursday Blocker 125.

Section web page: http://www.math.tamu.edu/~efendiev/math442_spring04/main.html

Textbook: There is no textbook for the course, material will be posted on the web at http://www.math.tamu.edu/~efendiev/math442_spring04/main.html

Catalogue Description:  The construction of mathematical models from areas such as economics, game theory, integer programming, mathematical biology and mathematical physics

Course Objective: We will discuss both probabilistic and deterministic techniques. For deterministic techniques ordinary differential equation will be one of the main tools. Numerical methods will be emphasized. MATLAB will be used in modeling, though no previous knowledge of MATLAB is required.

Prerequisites: M304 or M311  and M308 , or permission from the instructor.

Make-ups: Students must make arrangements in advance (the sooner the better) if they will not be handing in homework on time or
will miss an exam. Exam absences due to recognized University-related activities, religious holidays, verifiable illness, and family/medical
emergencies will be dealt with on an individual basis. In all cases of absence from exams a written excuse is required. Ignorance of the time
and place of an exam will not be accepted as an excuse for absence.

Incompletes: I will consider giving you an incomplete if you have successfully completed all but a small portion of the work of the
course and some severe, unexpected event prevents you from completing the course. This means that you must have taken at least 1 exam and quiz
and must be doing work at the C level or better. You will have to sign a contract detailing what you have to do to complete the course.
I cannot give you an incomplete simply because you are behind in your work; in the latter case you should try to drop the course.

S/U Grade: If you are registered S/U we will submit a grade of S if your letter grade is C or above, and otherwise a grade of U.

Procedure for calculating grades. The Math 442 grades will be computed in the following way:
a total score (on a scale of 0-600) by adding up the following:  one midterm exam score (on a scale of 0-100), final exam score (on a scale of 0-150), homework scores
(total score on a scale of 0-200), project score (on a scale 0-150)

Homework Assignments: An individual homework assignment will be made each week or two and posted at http://www.math.tamu.edu/~efendiev/math442_spring04/main.html

Projects: The projects will be assigned during the semester

Exams: There will be two exams (one midterm and one final) during the semester. There will be reviews before the exams. Exam dates: Midterm - week of March 8-12, Final - TBA
