Active Learning and Engagement: Making a Difference

Abstract: My talk will be presented in two separate yet overlapping parts; Active Learning in the classroom and overall Engagement. In 2014, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology called for an increase in the adoption of teaching practices critical to the goal of increasing STEM degrees by 33% per year. A meta-analysis on 225 studies found that Active Learning could be one of these. I have used Active Learning in my classrooms since 1994 and will step through an interactive example. I will then present a look at overall engagement through the RetainU program and the results from the last two years.
