Title: Modeling the Bending of Thin Materials
Abstract: The bending of thin materials occurs widely in nature, from the snapping of the Venus flytrap to the growth of leaves and flowers. It also occurs in the lab; examples include microswimmers and the bending of hydrogel discs. In this talk, we explore some of the mathematics used to model the bending of thin plates, including gradient descent algorithms and finite element discretizations. We briefly discuss current models of plate bending, and we present some simulations to demonstrate how the concepts discussed can give us accurate models of real-life phenomena.
