Should I Take Math 171 (Math/Science) or Math 151 (Engineering) Calculus?

The following description of our two calculus sequences 151/152 (engineering) and 171/172 (math/science) may help you decide which of them you should be taking. The first thing to be aware of is that both sequences cover the same material. However, the engineering sequence does not spend a great deal of time on theory or the underlying concepts, and students in this sequence (151/152) are not tested on this aspect of calculus. This is just the opposite in the math/science sequence. Here time is spent on definitions, theorems and the underlying concepts. Moreover students are tested on this material as well as the material students in 151/152 are tested on.

In summary the calculus sequence 171/172 is more demanding than the sequence 151/152.
