Description of Electives
  1. Math Electives: (6 hours) Of these 6 hours, at least 3 hours must be selected from MATH 411, 414, 442, 470. The other 3 hours should be selected from MATH 405-489; STAT 407, 410, 414, 415, 485, 489; CSCE 210-489; ISEN 400-499.

  2. Science Electives: (8 hours) Select 2 courses from CHEM 101/111 (or 107) or CHEM 103/113; CHEM 102/112 or CHEM 104/114; BIOL 111; BIOL 112; ASTR 111.

  3. Core Electives: (15 hours) Take 3 hours of a 200-400 level Language, Philosophy and Culture CORE course, a Creative Arts CORE course (3 hours.) For a list of the acceptable Language, Philosophy and Culture and Creative courses, please see your catalog at Undergraduate Catalog Listings. In addition, 6 hours of International and Cultural Diversity are required. SOCI 317 or INST 222 and INST 210 will satisfy the Social and Behavioral Science and ICD requirement. See the certification office or an advisor for more details.

  4. Two courses must meet the writing intensive core requirement. Math 220 and RDNG 372 will meet this requirement. Meeting this requirement is the responsibility of the student.

  5. ++ Free electives: (7 hours) Almost every course offered at TAMU will count as a free elective. However, there are some exceptions. Please see an advisor or the Mathematics Department's List of ineligible electives for a list of unacceptable courses. Math 170 counts as free elective hours.

  6. * Methods course - This course is a FALL only course and must be taken as close to student teaching as possible. Please see advisor concerning this course availability.

  7. NOTE: Completion of the courses on this degree plan (BA in Mathematics with Teacher Certification) makes it unnecessary for the student to have a traditional minor as required for other BA in Mathematics plans. The courses for teacher certification and student teaching experience substitute for a minor on this degree plan. IMPORTANT: In order to complete certification in the State of Texas, a student must complete a traditional student teaching semester.
