Text: Basic Partial Differential Equations by David Bleecker and George Csordas

Prerequisites: The equivalent of Math 308 and Math 601.
Grades: We will have two major exams, a mid-term and a final. Both will count for 35% of the grade, and both will include an in class, as well as a take home, portion. We will also have six homework sets that will count 30% (5% each).
Overview: This course will introduce students to the theory and application of partial differential equations.

We will cover a substantial portion of the material in the book through Chapter 7.

Read: Introduction and Chapter 1, pages 1-56. Try the following exercises:

Week #2 July 14 - 18

Read: Chapter 2, pages 57-110. Try the following exercises:


Assignment #2 Due Monday July 21st in class.

Do the following exercises: Exercises page 71-73 1d, 2c, 11, 12; page 90-91 1b, 2b (uses 1b), 3d (uses 1b); and page 107-110 3, 6a,b, 10, 13.


Week #3 July 21 - 25

Read: Chapter 3, pages 121-186 and Chapter 4 pages 187-206.

Assignment #3 Due Tuesday July 29th in class.

Do the following exercises: Exercises page 151 1a, 3; page 169 5, 7; page 184 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 (also read exercise 5a,b you will need it in 6 and 7); and page 205 2a, 3, 4, 5a, 7a.


Mid-Term Friday July 25th in class. The take-home portion will be handed out on Thursday July 24th and is due in class Monday July 28th.
