About the logo

The  course logo is an ancient "proof without words" of the Pythagorean theorem. The first frame shows a large square subdivided into four congruent right triangles and a smaller square whose sides are the hypotenuses of the triangles. Subsequent frames show a rearrangement of the triangles within the large square to display the complementary area as the union of two smaller squares whose side lengths are the lengths of the two shorter sides of the triangles.

The logo is an animated GIF, which was constructed by coding each frame in raw PostScript, converting to GIF format via ps2gif, and then concatenating the frames with the program gifmerge.
