Course Topics: Matrices, determinants, systems of linear equations, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, diagonalization of symmetric matrices, inner product spaces, orthogonal functions, and Bessel functions. Prerequisite: MATH 221; 251 or 253; and MATH 308 or concurrent enrollment therein.

Required Text: Lorenzo Sadun, Applied Linear Algebra: The Decoupling Principle, 1st ed., Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, 2001.

Syllabus: The course will start with material on matrices, systems of equations, and determinants. It will then cover most of chapters 2-4, 6, 7, and selected sections from 5. It will close with material on special functions.

Grading System & Tests: Your grade will be based on two in-class tests, a final exam, and quizzes & homework. Each in-class test will count for 25% of your grade, the quizzes & homework for 25%, and the final examination will count for the remaining 25%. A project may be substituted for the final exam. Details will be announced later. Your letter grade will be assigned this way: 90-100%, A; 80-89%, B; 70-79%, C; 60-69%, D; 59% or less, F.

Make-up Policy: I will give make-ups (or satisfactory equivalents) only in cases authorized under TAMU Regulations. In borderline cases, I will decide whether or not the excuse is authorized. Also, if you miss a test, contact me as soon as possible.
