COALITION MATH 151, FALL 1997 Group II (S. A. Fulling, assisted by Cary Lasher) Day 4.3 1. Product and quotient rule (minilecture). A. State product rule with example. Emphasize that order of terms doesn't matter. Generalize to more than two factors. B. Prove reciprocal rule: d/dx 1/g(x) = - g'(x)/g(x)^2. C. Derive quotient rule from reciprocal rule. D. Warnings and advice. 1. This derivation helps to remember the sign in the quotient rule. 2. It is silly (although correct) to use the quotient rule on d/dx (x^2/100) or d/dx (1/x^3). Product and power rules can be more direct. 2. Finish (or do) Maple demonstrations from previous day. SUCCESSFUL. (DID 2 BEFORE 1.)
