Comments on the textbook
This document is a commentary on An Introduction to
Analysis, fourth edition, by William R. Wade,
ISBN 978-0-13-229638-0. Included are amplifications, remarks, and corrections.
You can also check the textbook author's website, where some misprints are listed.
- Watch out for the overloaded numbering system. The Remarks,
Examples, Definitions, Theorems, and Lemmas are enumerated in a
common list within each chapter as follows: 1.1, 1.2, …
(Chapter 1), 2.1, 2.2, … (Chapter 2), …. But
the same sequence of numbers is used to label figures within
each chapter and is recycled again to enumerate
sections within
each chapter. The exercises are enumerated within sections, so
Exercise 4.3.11 is found in Section 4.3. Displayed
formulas are numbered within each chapter by positive integers, so
there is no quick way to find, say, equation (22) in Chapter 4.
- Observe that proofs are offset from the left-hand margin, which helps distinguish them from the surrounding text. Statements of theorems generally are not offset, but statements of named theorems are offset.
