Solutions of homework assignment #17 are posted here  It also includes at the end (pages 13-14) an useful remark on how to determine the type of the critical point of a linear system without finding the eigenvalues (you need just to analyze the sign of their real parts by looking on signs of the discriminant of the characteristic equation, of the trace and/or of the determinant of the matrix). The figure 9.1.9 on page 497 of the text summarizes nicely these discussions graphically and I strongly recommend to study this figure toward the final.
