Title: Calculus at USC (and Texas A&M): Access, Attitudes, and Maplets
Abstract: One of the simplest and most provoking statements from the ongoing NSF-funded national survey of calculus is:
Our survey revealed that Calculus I, as taught in our colleges and universities, is extremely efficient at lowering student confidence, enjoyment of mathematics, and desire to continue in a field that requires further mathematics.

While this presentation will include supporting data from USC and Texas A&M, the real focus will be more positive. After a quick overview of the Bressoud and Rasmussen's seven characteristics of successful calculus programs, we will see some more positive conclusions from the USC and Texas A&M data. In particular, students self-report that they find the Maplets for Calculus applets more beneficial than either Maple or MATLAB.
