Title: On nodal domains of eigenfunctions in chaotic quantum systems

Abstract:
It has been known for a long time that there exists a sequence of eigenfunctions on a flat square torus (or on a sphere) having a bounded number of nodal domains. In contrast, for a manifold with a chaotic geodesic flow, the number of nodal domains of an eigenfunction is expected to grow with the eigenvalue. I am first going to describe how one can prove that this is indeed true for Maass--Hecke eigenforms on arithmetic hyperbolic triangles. And then I am going to explain recent progress on understanding the rate of growth of the number of nodal domains.
