Title: Large-Eddy Simulation with OpenFOAM: Practice, Applications and Future Challenges

Abstract: In my presentation, I summarize experiences gained at the Aalto University, Finland on the application and development of the open source CFD code OpenFOAM. The focus of our research is to tackle various subproblems of the turbulent combustion and mixing phenomena occuring in internal combustion engines. First, I cover the practical side of code implementation and high level programming in OpenFOAM. Second, I provide an overview of our recent progress in the simulation of highly compressible flow, moving mesh for in-cylinder flow, and combustion. Last, I will outline a new numerical strategy for LES called Scale-Selective Discretization (SSD). SSD approach reduces the diffusive truncation error of any existing space scheme from order 2n+1 to to 2n+3 (n=0,1,2,...) enabling so called implicit LES.
