Description:

Title: Insolvability of classical Greek problems

Abstract:

The three Greek problems of antiquity had been among the most famous unsolved mathematics problems in history. The angle trisection, doubling the cube, and squaring the circle problems had not been settled till the advent of abstract algebra and analysis in 19th century.

The talk will describe one of activities of the departmental SMaRT (Summer Mathematics Research Training) high school camp, in which the students are led to proving the insolvability of the first two of these problems.
