Colloquium - Emily Witt

Time: 2:00PM - 3:00PM

Location: BLOC 220

Speaker: Emily Witt, University of Kansas

Description:

Title: Breaking local cohomology into understandable pieces
Abstract: Introduced by Grothendieck, local cohomology modules are intrinsically algebraic objects. However, since they also encode geometric and topological information, these useful tools have wide-ranging applications. Unfortunately, theses modules are typically very large (e.g., not finitely generated), and can be difficult to characterize. For instance, it can even be difficult to decide whether or not a local cohomology module is zero! In this talk, we will discuss new ways of understanding local cohomology, with techniques coming from diverse mathematical areas, e.g., involving differential operators and invariant theory.
