Distance Education - M.S. in Mathematics

Open Letter to Prospective Students

Thanks for your inquiry about our Masters of Science in Mathematics - at a distance - programs. We have a Web page that gives a lot of details about the program. The URL is http://distance-ed.math.tamu.edu/. At our homepage, we have a frequently asked questions page at http://distance-ed.math.tamu.edu/faq.html. It contains lots of tidbits of information about the program. Almost every question was posed by someone inquiring about the program. You can find when semesters begin and end at the University academic calendar website, http://calendar.tamu.edu/.

The degree we offer is the masters of science in mathematics. It is not a masters of mathematics nor it a masters of mathematics education. The "with a teaching option" indicates that some of the required courses are designed especially for the needs of mathematics teachers. It is not an appropriate course to obtain a Ph.D. in pure mathematics, though it could provide a good basis for a Ph.D. in mathematics education. Applicants in lieu of a B.S. degree in mathematics should have had at minimum the three semester calculus sequence, differential equations, and at least two additional advanced mathematics courses or equivalents.

We are very excited about the program, and although not all of the courses are in place just yet, courses will be offered regularly. The current schedule includes online courses from other departments that count toward the mathematics masters degree. The courses that have been offered online or are scheduled to be offered the first time this year are:

  • Math 409 - Advanced Calculus
  • Math 451 - Differential Equations
  • Math 414 - Fourier Series and Wavelets
  • Math 470 - Communication and Cryptography
  • Math 609 - Numerical Analysis
  • Math 614 - Dynamical Systems and Chaos
  • Math 629 - History of Mathematics
  • Math 639 - Iterative Methods
  • Math 640 - Linear Algebra
  • Math 645 - Problem Survey I
  • Math 646 - Problem Survey II
  • Math 653 - Algebra I
  • Math 660 - Computational Linear Algebra
  • Math 664 - Seminar in Applied Mathematics - various topics
  • Math 666 - Geometry
  • Math 696 - Mathematical Communications and Technology, and
  • Math 689 - Special topics

To enroll, either as a degree-seeking (G7) or a non-degree seeking (G6), you must meet the basic requirements stated above and complete the application process. Up to four courses taken as a G6 student will transfer to the graduate program (G7)here, should you enroll later. The G6 application is now online at http://www.tamu.edu/admissions/Grad/Deappreq.html. A list of costs is available at http://www.tamu.edu/ode. (Look up Student Information.) To apply for the G7 or graduate status you must take the GRE examination.

Note: All applicants must first, successfully complete our screening test that covers basic topics in pre-calculus. Before any application materials are reviewed, this test must be successfully completed.

A list of tuition and fees is available at http://finance.tamu.edu/sbs/ Financial aid is available to students with regular graduate standing. See http://financialaid.tamu.edu/. While financial aid is available as indicated, our graduate fellowships are available only to resident students.

Finally, what we do not offer is K-12 teaching certification, that is to say, we do not offer K-12 licensure in Texas or any other state. Please check with your state education department or agency for local procedures. For post baccalaureate certification within Texas, read the information at http://post-bacc.coe.tamu.edu. If you are interested in State of Texas K-12 (alternative) certification, please go to http://accelerate.tamu.edu for more information.

If you are applying for G6 status, we may ask you to take the GRE examination.

Sincerely,
Dr. Allen
